WORLDMUSEUM Vienna, Austria October 1, 2021 - May 31, 2022 ...from Afghanistan
The exhibition is in response to the fall of Kabul to the Talibans and wants to take a closer look at Afghanistan and the Afghans. We invited Afghans living in Vienna to choose everyday items from our collection and to share their memories and stories with us. Photographs by Brigitte Neubacher, Josef Polleross, Max Klimburg, Alfred Janata, Roger Senarclens de Grancy, Walter Kuschel and Georg Sarac round up the exhibition.
Kish -IRNA_ The Photoexhibition „War and Khorramshar” by Jasem GHABANPOOR was opened by the Vice Director of Culture, Tourism and Social Affairs Saeid POORALI in attendance of the Austrian ambassador Stefan SCHOLZ.
It was followed by the photo book presentation “Take a look at Iran during the holy month of Ramadan” by the Austrian photographer Josef POLLEROSS. The book was made possible by the cooperation between the Austrian Embassy and the Free Zone Kish.
Old Cinemas in Iran, April 4, - May 18, 2019, Galerie Hinterland, FOTO WIEN
The first cinema in Iran opened 1904 in Tehran. With the foundation of the National Film Society in 1949, the foundation stone was laid for alternative cinema. The international Success of Iranian film began with Kiarostami's film A Taste of Cherry, which was awarded the Palme d'or in Cannes in 1997. At the end of the Shah era in 1979, 524 cinemas were in operation, over a hundred of which were burned to the ground during the Revolution, the ones that survived being closed down. Cinemas reopened only after the Iran-Iraq war began, with the intention of mobilizing the public for the war. About half of the cinemas that date back to era before the revolution are still in operation today.
Austrian photographer Josef Polleross has been documenting old movie theaters in Iran since 2015. He has traveled the country several times, photographed many of the cinemas that have survived and talked to their operators. A piece of contemporary history he tries to conserve.
